Album Review: Testament by All Saints

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Two years after their triumphant return to form with their fourth album Red Flag, Shaznay, Nicole, Natalie, and Melanie are back once again with their fifth album Testament.

Album opener “Who Do You Love” begins with a spoken word intro by Nicole, reminiscent of her iconic “Never Ever” monologue which kicked-off their debut album 21 years ago. “Three Four” is a bold, lavish change of pace, followed by lead single “Love Lasts Forever” that proves All Saints can still sound current in today’s musical climate.

Testament is All Saints’ first album to include interludes—“Nowhere To Hide” (which lyrically flows into one of the album highlights “No Issues”) and “Breathe and Let Go” (a stripped-back acapella from Shaznay).

New single “After All” is far and away the standout track of the album—an atmospheric, melancholy refrain produced by William Orbit, the genius behind classic hits “Pure Shores” and “Black Coffee.” We've added “After All” to our 2018 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify.

While Red Flag bridged the gap between the classic All Saints sound and a more experimental flavour, Testament follows that path into more unchartered territory. The overall tone is moodier and more contemplative than ever. However, the brassy melodic tones of “Don’t Look Over Your Shoulder” provide some lighter relief, while “Glorious” is a clear contender for a single with its anthemic, call-to-arms chorus.

“Fumes” and “Testament in Motion” take the tempo back down, while “Footprints” closes the album in perfect style showcasing the girls’ trademark harmonies. You can listen to the album on Spotify here ...

Testament is the sound of All Saints at their creative peak – the lyrics, melodies, and production are more exploratory than ever before. These ladies are obviously enjoying the freedom of making music on their own terms, without the restraints of any record company. Long may this new-found freedom continue!

All hooked up,
