Vibe Like This and Call On Me by SG Lewis

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Back in August, our contributor Jason F introduced us to SG Lewis with his double A-side single "Missing You"/"Something About Your Love." We just checked in and he has had 2 singles out single then: "Vibe Like This" featuring Ty Dolla $ign & Lucky Daye and "Call On Me" with Tove Lo. They both have the same single artwork. We'll review both below.

"Vibe Like This" featuring Ty Dolla $ign & Lucky Daye. Looks like Ty Dolla $ign raps/sings the verses, and Lucky Daye sings the bridge and the chorus. Perhaps SG Lewis is singing in the mix somewhere. "Vibe Like This" was written by Conor Albert Quintan, David "Lucky Daye" Brown, SG Lewis, and Ty Dolla $ign. It was produced by SG Lewis. We've added the music video to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on YouTube ...

"Call On Me" with Tove Lo is a fabulous synthpop delight with Tove taking the lead vocals. "Call On Me" was written by Orlando Higginbottom, SG Lewis, and Tove Lo. It was produced by SG Lewis and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. For some odd reason, we can not add this to our YouTube playlist. So watch the lyric video here ...

Both are available on digital outlets everywhere. Buy your copies today. We've added both of them to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify. You'll also hear SG Lewis's previous singles "Missing You" and "Something About Your Love." there. Please remember to use Spotify as a way to hear new music. The best way to support the artists are to buy their music. Please do so!

Cheers then,

"This Is Your Life" is a beautiful ballad about believing in yourself. It has a lovely, uplifting melody. Una gives an outstanding vocal performance. Check out the music video, which we have added to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on YouTube ...

Get What You Want by Lastlings

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Great news! The Australian brother and sister duo Lastlings are back with their first new music since 2020! YAY! This week, they released a new song called "Get What You Want." "Get What You Want" is an epic, dramatic song. It starts off sounding like a ballad, but then the dark rhythm comes in mesmerizing you into a hypnotic groove. The music video is beautifully filmed capturing the essence of the song. Check it out on our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on YouTube ...

Highs & Lows by Dagny

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Have you had a busy week? Take some time out to relax with this post. Norwegian artist Dagny has a new song out called "Highs & Lows" and it is a beautiful ballad.

"Highs & Lows" is a stripped back piano ballad. Dagny gives an emotional vocal performance. The melody is quite nice and we found ourselves singing the chorus as we were walking the other day. Check out the intimate music video, which we have added to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on YouTube.

"Highs & Lows" was written by Dagny, Celine Svaberg, Corey Sanders, and Jeppe London. It was produced by Jeppe London and Ole Torjus Hofvind. It is available on digital outlets everywhere. Album Review: Boomerang by Betty Boo

Dear Poptastic Readers,

What a year it has been for Betty Boo! Finally, her third album Boomerang was released on Friday. Although we had heard a lot of the songs beforehand, we wanted to spend some quality time over the weekend and this week before giving you our review. If you aren't familiar with Betty Boo, please check out our feature: The Return of Betty Boo!

Betty's third album comes a mere 30 years after her second album in 1992: GRRR! It's Betty Boo! Her first album was in 1990: Boomania. Welcome back, Betty! We are so happy. We'll give you a track-by-track review. If the name of the song is highlighted, that means we you can click on it to read what we originally said about it. Let's go ....

1. "Get Me To The Weekend" was Betty's big comeback single released in January of this year, and what a comeback it was. A glorious, fun anthem about dreaming about the weekend. It is an excellent way to start the album. We've had this song on heavy rotation since January and we never tire of it. If you know 80s music, then you know the music samples "Love Action (I Believe In Love)" by The Human League. Watch the super cute video below. It features the Booettes (the Booettes are dancers in many of Betty's videos over the years).

2. "Shining Star" was Betty's second single that was released in May, and it is another song that we just haven't tired of. It's a shimmering disco pop tune that is all-parts amazing. We absolutely love this one, too. Check out the bright music video, which also features the Booettes ...

3. "Miracle" is the most recent single released in September. This song features Chuck D, from the group Public Enemy. In case you didn't know, Betty got her start for rapping for him in a McDonald's lobby in the late 80s. So it is a full circle moment. It's a good song with catchy chorus. Check out the music video they filmed for it. Sadly, the Booettes aren't in the video ...

4. "Right By Your Side" featuring David Gray was the third single that was released in July. It even got playlist by BBC Radio 2 in the UK. It's a nice song. Later on in the album, there is a version of "Shining Star" with Sophie Ellis-Bextor. We kinda wish Sophie had been singing the chorus here. You can see the official lyric video here ...

5. "Boomerang" is the bombastic title track that we are just in love with. This was released in June of this year, and we have been bouncing to it ever since. Such a fun party song. Check out the official lyric video here ....

6. "Nobody Can Bring Me Down" starts off with some distorted vocals on the chorus. The music takes a bit of a darker turn. It has some heavy percussion and spooky synths. Have a listen here ...

7. "Stop Your Nonsense (Bubblegum Pop)" picks the pace back up with this energetic light track. It has some glorious house keyboards. It is really is a fun song.

8. "Never Too Late" is NOT a remake of the Kylie song with the same name. Instead, it is downtempo song about changing your life. Betty is giving out life advice here: Do what you like! Have a listen ...

9. "All I Wanna Do Is Dance" is a fantastic feel-good dance pop song with soaring strings, horny horns, and floating flutes. This is so good that we could imagine this being a future single. Hear it here ...

10. "808" is a steady song with a strong chorus. We had no idea what 808 meant so we looked it up, and apparently there are lots of meanings for it. What do you think Betty is rapping/singing about?

11. "Superstar" brings the fun back quickly. This was also a track that was released back in August. It is a super groovy track and we just love it.

12. "Hell Yeah" is great party pop song. This one is really strong and it could definitely be a future single, too. This just makes you feel so happy.

BONUS TRACKS:

13: "Shining Star" featuring Sophie Ellis-Bextor. This is the same as the original except Sophie is on the chorus with her long English vowels pronouncing dancing a bit differently. We wondered why this wasn't the single version, and we heard that it was out about the same time as Sophie's song "Hypnotized." We aren't sure as "Shining Star" was released in May, and "Hypnotized" was released in early July. But we love both versions. We'd love to hear Sophie on the chorus of "Right By Your Side."

14. "S.O.S." is a delightful downtempo track. It has a middle eastern feel to it. It has a great chorus that will have you singing along in no time.

15. "Bright Lights" is another fun party song. Very energetic. Betty knows how to churn out these fun songs.

16. "Get Me To The Weekend" (Original Extended Mix) — FABULOUS

17. "Right By Your Side" (Extended Mix) — Nice

18. "Miracle" (Extended Mix) — Great

19. "Doin' The Do '22" sounds like it is given the drum and bass treatment.

20. "Where Are You Baby? '22" sounds like a trip-hop space version.

There you have it. Betty really made up for lost time with 30 years between albums. Betty mentioned that there may be 2 more singles before her next album comes out next year! WOO! We vote for "Hell Yeah" and "All I Wanna Do Is Dance." We are so happy that she is back. We give the album 5 glorious stars!

★★★★★

You can hear Betty's album Boomerang on streaming platforms (like Spotify here), but the best way to support Betty is to purchase her music.

Cheers then,

This Ain't Love by Carda × Thimlife

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Australian artist Carda released a new track on Friday called "This Ain't Love" and it features the artist Thimlife. We haven't heard of Thimlife before, so they are new to us.

"This Ain't Love" is a ballad with some beats. The lyrics are about a relationship that didn't make it. The singer gives an emotional vocal performance. The music is enough to make you nod your head or tap your foot. This is quite nice, and we think you will like it. Check out the official lyric video, which we have added to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on YouTube

"This Ain't Love" was written by Adrian Cardamone (aka Carda), Ciara Muscat, Demi Louise, Dylan Burrows, Jasmin Baumgaetner, Rachael Fahim, and Sebastian Prem. It was produced by Carda and Thimlife. It is available on digital outlets everywhere. Buy your copy today. We've added it to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify. Love Life by Rikky Disco featuring Chris Tall

Dear Poptastic Readers,

On Friday, Swedish duo Rikky Disco released a single called "Love Life." No, it isn't a remake of the Alcazar song by the same name. The credits of this song feature Chris Tall, which is a bit odd as Chris Tall is half of Rikky Disco.

"Love Life" is very much a club track aimed straight at the dance floor. And upon first listen we understand why it features Chris Tall, as it sounds right in line with his other 2 singles this year: "Ridin' High" and "Back To My Rootz." There are prominent vocals from Fanacy, who is the singer of the group. There are also some deep vocals from Chris Tall. Is this what we were expecting from Rikky Disco? No, but we like it and we are dancing around all the same. Have a listen ...

"Love Life" was written and produced by Christian Jonson (aka Chris Tall) and Fanny Wahlqvist (aka Fanacy). Together they are Rikky Disco! It is available on digital outlets everywhere. Buy your copy today. We've added it to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify. You'll also hear their single "Love Hangover" there. Please remember to use Spotify as a way to hear new music. The best way to support the artists are to buy their music. Please do so!

Running With The Night by Bananarama

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Bananarama have released a new single today called "Running With The Night." YAY! It is from their latest album MasqueradeCheck out the glorious artwork!

"Running With The Night" is an uptempo, energetic electropop banger! The lyrics are about a relationship that has ended badly, but being able to remember the good parts, which in this case were the early days of the relationship. There is visualizer video that is in black and white. It has Keren and Sara walking through a park. (Fans may be reminded of their sweet video for 1996's "Take Me To Your Heart.") Our only complaint is that a lot of the footage repeats. We would have loved a visualizer with no repeats. Having said that, we are very happy with what they gave us. We've added the visualizer to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions YouTube playlist ....

"Running With The Night" was written by Sara Dallin, Keren Woodward, and Ian Masterson, who also produced the track. The single has a radio edit, which isn't that much different to the album version. It is available on digital outlets everywhere. Buy your copy today. We've added it to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify. You'll also hear their previous tracks "Favourite""Masquerade", "Velvet Lies" and "Forever Young" there. You can also read our Masquerade album review.
