Dear Poptastic Readers,
New artist alert! Last year, English singer-songwriter, musician, and producer SG Lewis (née Samuel George Lewis) released his debut album Times, which included some great singles including “One More” that featured the legendary Nile Rodgers as well as the super-catchy “Chemicals” from 2020. Now Sam is back with a pair of new tracks amounting to the digital equivalent of a double A-side: “Something About Your Love” and “Missing You.”
Save for a single verse and a sweetly starry-eyed refrain that gives the song it’s title, “Something About Your Love” is a largely instrumental jam that reverently references Daft Punk in its execution. It’s an uplifting track that captures the feeling of infatuation that comes at the beginning of a relationship. The song samples "Tender Love" by Force MDs.
Conversely, “Missing You” seems to be about that moment of realization that a relationship has run its course and a yearning for someone new. From the bouncy Bronski Beat synths that kick things off to the manic cowbells in the song’s final 30 seconds that recall Stock Aitken Waterman’s production on Dead Or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round” or Bananarama’s “Venus”, the song is steeped in neon 80s Hi-NRG.
Only Your Love,
—Jason F
