Dear Poptastic Readers,
Last week, Steps made history in the UK with the first group to have #1 albums across these 4 decades: 90s, 00s, 10s, and now 20s. Their latest album is called Platinum Collection (which is basically a new greatest hits). We have already featured the "Platinum Megamix" and "Hard 2 Forget." Their latest single is a remake of "The Runner" originally done in 1979 by the girl group The Three Degrees. Fun fact: pop legends Bananarama also recorded a fantastic version of the song for their 2009 album Viva. They even had a Buzz Junkies Remix aimed directly at the dance floors!
The Steps version of "The Runner" is a hi-nrg synth affair. The tempo is almost too fast here — similar to the Buzz Junkies remix of the Bananarama version. Steps have been called "ABBA on Acid" and this remake really makes the most of that saying. It isn't a bad version, and there are some nice elements like the key change in the middle. Steps are all great singers, we just feel this could have been slowed down a bit to be a bit cooler. What do you think? Check out the official lyric video here ...
"The Runner" was written by the legendary Giorgio Moroder and The Three Degrees member Sheila Diane Ferguson. The Steps version was produced by The Alias and John Dixon. It is available on digital outlets everywhere. Buy your copy today. We've added it to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify. You'll also hear "Platinum Megamix" and "Hard 2 Forget" there, too. Please remember to use Spotify as a way to hear new music. The best way to support the artists are to buy their music. Please do so!
