Just Like Honey by Annie

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Annie recently released another new single this summer. WOO! This was one is a remake of "Just Like Honey" originally recorded by The Jesus and Mary Chain.

We didn't know the alt-rock original, so we had a spin, and well, it wasn't our cup of tea. However, we quite like Annie's new version of the song! Annie's version is very dream pop with her soft vocals and the synth pop feel. Have a listen ...

"Just Like Honey" was written by Jim Reid and William Reid. It was produced by Stefan Storm. It is available on digital outlets everywhere. Stream the music when you can, but also buy the music to help support the artists. We've added it to our 2021 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify. You'll hear Annie's previous single "Neon Lights" with Jake Shears there, too.

Love, Truth & Honesty,
— Sausi O'Sullivan

The Belated 30th Anniversary of Long Train Running by Bananarama

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Back in April, Bananarama celebrated the 30th anniversary of their 1991 single "Long Train Running." Pop Life, The Unofficial Bananarama Fanzine has been putting our special digital editions of the fanzine dedicated to the 30th anniversaries of the singles from the Pop Life album. So, the latest one was delayed, but it is here now!

"Long Train Running" was flamenco-pop cover of the Doobie Brothers classic. Producer Youth, aka Martin Glover, enlisted the help of the Gypsy Kings for more guitars and vocals. The result was an amazing cover version that should have been a smash hit all over the world. The music video was campy and fun with girls of Bananarama having a blast. Have a look ...

Wasn't that FAB? Yes, it was! So now the Pop Life Fanzine is out with belated issue dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the release. You can also download the previous 2 issues also.

You can stream the incredible Pop Life album on Spotify here ...

Cheers then,
—Davearama

Southgate You’re The One (Football’s Coming Home Again) by Atomic Kitten

Dear Poptastic Readers,

English girl group Atomic Kitten are making headlines with a new version of their 2001 megahit “Whole Again.” This time, the song has new lyrics and a new title called “Southgate You’re The One (Football’s Coming Home Again).” Whatever does it all mean?

The new lyrics and title are in reference to England being in the final of the Euro 2020 Football Championship (That’s soccer to all you Americans). Where is Southgate? Well, apparently that is reference to Gareth Southgate, the manager of the England’s national men’s football team. Basically, this is for England who currently has football fever — and rightfully so. So here is the new song …

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCcD0xHtLqs

OK, it is all right. Let’s face it: the original is better. However, we are really excited for Atomic Kitten (Liz, Natasha, and Jenny) being back together again. They called in a day in 2005, with a few pop ups here and there. They even reunited with Kerry and without Jenny for a few years, but then Kerry was out again. Liz and Natasha have toured as a duo since. They have an amazing singles discography so if you don’t know them, you should definitely check them out!

Fun facts: Atomic Kitten was created by OMD members Andy McCluskey and Stuart Kershaw. Heidi Range from the Sugababes was in Atomic Kitten before they were named Atomic Kitten. It was Heidi, Liz, and Kerry. Heidi quit before they got going. That’s when Natasha came in. They released their debut single “Right Now” in 1999. Three more singles and an album followed. Just before the release of their 5th single “Whole Again” in 2001, Kerry quit. They got Jenny in and had to re-record the vocals and re-shoot a new video all very quickly. It paid off. “Whole Again” shot to #1 in the UK and stayed there for 4 weeks. A massive hit.

Atomic Kitten would notch up two more UK #1s with remakes of The Bangles’ “Eternal Flame” and of Blondie’s “The Tide Is High.” Between 1999 and 2005, they had 14 Top 20 hits in the UK. Our favourites are “Be With You”, “It’s OK”, “You Are”, “I Want Your Love”, “Ladies Night”, and “Someone Like You.” Check out their Greatest Hits. You won’t be sorry.

Back to the new(ish) song, it was written by Andy McCluskey, Bill Padley, Jenn Godfrey, Liz McClarnon, and Stuart Kershaw. It was produced by Bill Padley and Goldcrush. It is available on digital outlets everywhere. Buy your copy today! We've added it our 2021 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify. Enjoy!

Cheers then,

Wannabe25 by the Spice Girls

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Yesterday was very special day in the world of pop music, as it’s been 25 years since the Spice Girls released their debut single “Wannabe” in the UK! And today, they have released a special digital single of "Wannabe25." Details below.

Of course, for their loyal fanbase across the globe this anniversary has a huge cause for celebration – especially in these Covid times. It’s already been two years since Geri Horner, Emma Bunton, Melanie C and Mel B completed their sell-out Spiceworld 2019 stadium tour – which cemented their incredible legacy as pop music legends. The girls recently joined forces with their former bandmate Victoria Beckham to promote her new Pride t-shirt, raising money to combat LGBTQ+ youth homelessness in the UK.

Spiceword 2019

To celebrate the single’s 25th anniversary, the Spice Girls are issuing a new picture disc vinyl and cassette of “Wannabe” on August 27th. “Wannabe25” includes the original demo and a previously unreleased track “Feed Your Love” (which was originally previewed by writer/producer Biff Standard on Instagram back in 2016 for the 20th anniversary of “Wannabe”).

Picture disc vinyl and cassette of “Wannabe25”

It’s quite significant that the girls have agreed to put out an unreleased track for this occasion, since they have notably decided not to do this throughout their career (fans are still longing for “W.O.M.A.N” to be released after being performed on the 1999 Christmas in Spiceworld Tour).  Although we have a while longer to wait for the “Wannabe25” vinyl/cassette (which was delayed due to unprecedented demand), the single has been released to all digital platforms today! Listen here ...

Melanie C recently teased that there are more exciting things to come from the Spice Girls this year, as they go on to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their debut album Spice in November. We’re excited to find out what else they have up their sleeves. Fingers crossed, when live music is back in full force, we can expect to see the girls back on stage together again… who knows, perhaps even Victoria too?!?

Enjoy the 25th anniversary celebrations – be sure to stream/download “Wannabe25” from today and pre-order the vinyl/cassette from the official Spice Girls store!

Cheers then,

Normski

Vicious by Marcella Detroit

Dear Poptastic Readers,

You may remember last month we wrote about the legendary Marcella Detroit celebrating an incredible 50 years in the music business. Marcella has marked this tremendous achievement with the release of her latest single “Vicious Bitch” (Due to social media not liking the B-word, it is sometimes listed as “Vicious.”) on her birthday, June 21st — a belated happy birthday to Marcy from all at Poptastic Confessions

“Beautiful in her summer dress, but sometimes she’s just a vicious bitch!” Marcella snarls on this tongue-in-cheek number. You might be wondering – who is this song written about? As Marcella explains, “It’s not actually about anyone, it’s about `Mother Nature’ and how wonderful she can be giving us so much beauty and then she’ll throw in a pandemic or a super storm to keep us on our toes.”

For the Shakespears Sister fans out there, “Vicious Bitch” even has a throwback to the “Goodbye Cruel World” music video – as Marcella exclaims “You know, you wouldn’t be able to do these things to me if I wasn’t such a feeble machine” (of course, the opening of the “Goodbye Cruel World” video was itself a pastiche of the movie Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?). Here is the music video …

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id3YqvyxcoM

“Vicious Bitch” was written by Marcella and Lance Aston (her husband), who also produced the track. It is available to download on digital outlets everywhere, including Marcella’s new website www.marcelladetroit.rocks. Marcella is adding new musical content to her website every Friday, so be sure to check it out and stay up-to-date on her social media accounts. We've added the song to our 2021 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify. Enjoy!

“Vicious Bitch” has also been given the deluxe remix treatment for this single release. No less than 11 fabulous dance mixes are featured, from the likes of OKJames, Joe Gillan and Larry Peace. You can also hear the mixes here …

In even more exciting news, a brand new album Gold is planned for release in September and we can’t wait to hear it!

Cheers then,

—Normski
