Dear Poptastic Readers,
#1 in my
favourite songs of 2013 is “Nightlife” by Jody Watley. You can click on the song title to see what Poptastic Confessions had to say about it when it came out.
This feel-good song is just so fabulous! It is inspiring and uplifting. It makes you want to dance. It is so full of energy and just empowers you to be free to be yourself. That is why it is my #1 favourite song of the year. Jody filmed a video for the song, but before it could be edited and released, she gave us this lyric video with the original version of the song.
January 8, 2014 Update: Jody just released the video and it is for the Dave Doyle Remix, which features Gerald Brown (from her former group Shalamar) singing the second verse. The video is FABulous! Check it out ...
Jody
Watley definitely deserves the #1 spot. I’ve been making these Top 20 lists
since I was a kid. And Jody has never been #1 on my list, until now. She came
close a couple of times. Here is how some of her other hits did on my Top 20
lists …
1987: "Looking For A New Love" #2
1987: "Don’t You Want Me" #9
1987: "Still A Thrill" #13
1988: "Some Kind Of Lover" #9
1988: "Most Of All" #21
1989: "Real Love" #2
1989: "Friends" #5
1991: "I Want You" #8
1992: "I’m The One You Need" #6
1995: "Affection" #19
1998: "Off The Hook" #19
2008: "A Beautiful Life" #13
As you
can see, I lost track of Jody for about 10 years. But through the magic of the
Internet and social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram … I was
able to reconnect with Jody’s music. But not only Jody’s music, but Jody
herself. She runs her own accounts on these social media sites. And sometimes
she has to deal with the disrespectful fans. That part is a shame. But she is very generous and real to her lovely fans. More power to her, I say!

And Jody has featured Poptastic Confessions on her website and even mentioned me by name! WOW! And a highlight this year was
me seeing Jody live in concert and she recognized me from Twitter. It was a dream
come true for this kid at heart, who has been listening to Jody’s music since I was 17
and living in a small town in Indiana. If you want your dreams to come true,
make them happen. Jody has definitely inspired me all these years and even
today.
I wish I could accurately describe how much Jody's music has meant in my life. Yes, mostly her first three solo albums ... they were the soundtrack to my life back then. It helped me from a place of being an awkward teen to help me be comfortable in my own skin. And to that I say, "Thank you for the music, Jody Watley! It means so very much to me."
I am very much excited to have Jody's new music be part of my current soundtrack to my life. Her next album is called Paradise and it will be out in 2014. I can't wait! Until then, there are glorious remixes of "Nightlife."
