What Now by Honey

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Do you need even more ABBA in your life? Then you might want to check out this Swedish duo named Honey and their new song called "What Now." It is giving us serious ABBA vibes and we are loving it.

We've not heard of Honey before. The Swedish duo is made up of Magda Skyllbäck and Miranda Öhman. They had 2 songs out in 2020: "Give Me Love" and "Do It All Again." In 2021, they released the songs: "When Harry Met Sally", "Summer Fling", and "Somebody To." Looks like we have some listening to do!

The new song "What Now" is a ballad of sorts as the lyrics are about heartbreak. It starts off rather slow and epic, and then the beat kicks in and it becomes a glorious mid-tempo number with a soaring chorus! It really is amazing how much this song sounds like ABBA. Clearly it is a nod to the super group. Listen to the song here ...

Wasn't that lovely? Yes, it was. "What Now" was written by Magda Skyllbäck, Miranda Öhman with Isaac Shalam, who also produced the track.  It is available on digital outlets everywhere. Buy your copy today. We've added it to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify. Please remember to use Spotify as a way to hear new music. The best way to support the artists are to buy their music. Please do so!

Cheers then,

'Til Dawn by Rebecca & Fiona featuring Chinaski + Someday by Chambray featuring Rebecca & Fiona

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Rebecca & Fiona have hit the dance floors with 2 latest releases. called "'Til Dawn" featuring Chinaski. The other being "Someday" by Chambray featuring Rebecca & Fiona.

On our first listen of "'Til Dawn", we realized we knew the lyrics. As we sang along, we realized that it is a remix of their song "Real Love", which was #20 in our Top 100 Songs of 2021.  "'Til Dawn" has a relentless baseline reminiscent of Giorgio Moroder. The music is quite different from the "Real Love." But it still has the same heart of the original. It has a lot of dance elements this time around. "'Til Dawn" was written by Rebecca & Fiona with Stefan Haag, who also produced this version. Have a listen here ...

"Someday" is a delightful piano-led house pop song. It has a great melody and the lyrics are about remembering when you were younger and thinking about your future, which is probably now. Let that sink in. It's a fun song, but our only complaint is that it is too short. There is an extended mix, though. "Someday" was written by Rebecca & Fiona with André Rost, who also produced the track. The music video is a visualizer of mostly skating. Have a loo

Both songs are available on digital outlets everywhere. Buy your copies today. We've added them to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify, which also features some songs released at the end of 2021, including Rebecca & Fiona's amazing song "Sweetest Delight." You will also hear "All The Things She Said" and "Savannah" there, too. Please remember to use Spotify as a way to hear new music. The best way to support the artists are to buy their music. Please do so!

Cheers then,

The Runner by Steps

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Last week, Steps made history in the UK with the first group to have #1 albums across these 4 decades: 90s, 00s, 10s, and now 20s. Their latest album is called Platinum Collection (which is basically a new greatest hits). We have already featured the "Platinum Megamix" and "Hard 2 Forget." Their latest single is a remake of "The Runner" originally done in 1979 by the girl group The Three Degrees. Fun fact: pop legends Bananarama also recorded a fantastic version of the song for their 2009 album Viva. They even had a Buzz Junkies Remix aimed directly at the dance floors!

The Steps version of "The Runner" is a hi-nrg synth affair. The tempo is almost too fast here — similar to the Buzz Junkies remix of the Bananarama version. Steps have been called "ABBA on Acid" and this remake really makes the most of that saying. It isn't a bad version, and there are some nice elements like the key change in the middle. Steps are all great singers, we just feel this could have been slowed down a bit to be a bit cooler. What do you think? Check out the official lyric video here ...

"The Runner" was written by the legendary Giorgio Moroder and The Three Degrees member Sheila Diane Ferguson. The Steps version was produced by The Alias and John Dixon. It is available on digital outlets everywhere. Buy your copy today. We've added it to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify. You'll also hear "Platinum Megamix" and "Hard 2 Forget" there, too. Please remember to use Spotify as a way to hear new music. The best way to support the artists are to buy their music. Please do so!

Superstar by Betty Boo

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Betty Boo has released her 5th song this week from her forthcoming album Boomerang. The new song is called "Superstar." This follows the songs "Get Me To The Weekend", "Shining Star", "Boomerang", and "Right By Your Side." However, there are 2 more tracks that you can listen to from the album. More on that in a bit.

"Superstar" is fun song with a very 90s vibe to it. It may be best described a pop dance song that is cool. The beat isn't too fast, but it is faster than a mid-tempo song. Betty is doing her signature rapping/singing for the verses with a bridge and chorus that will have you singing along in no time. Check it out ...

Remember when we told you that you can hear 2 other tracks from the album? Well, they aren't on streaming services, but the audio tracks on Betty's official YouTube channel. First up is "Nobody Can Bring Me Down." It is a mid-tempo number in which the music feels a bit darker and has an edge to it. Have a listen here ...

The next song that we can hear on Betty's official YouTube video is "Stop Your Nonsense (Bubblegum Pop!)." This is a really fun song with lots of energy. We love it. We have a lot of words to learn with this one! This is just so much fun. We can't wait for it to be on streaming services. Hear it here ...

"Superstar" was written by Alison Clarkson (aka Betty Boo) and Andy Wright, who both produced it with Gavin Goldberg. It is available on digital outlets everywhere. Buy your copy today. We've added it to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify. Please remember to use Spotify as a way to hear new music. The best way to support the artists are to buy their music. Out (Out) by Little Boots

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Sometimes, we miss the release of singles by the artists that we like. We completely missed Little Boots' single release of "Out (Out)" in February of this year. The song is from her album Tomorrow's Yesterdays. Well, better late than never. You might remember we featured her previous singles from that album: "Silver Balloons", "Landline", and "Crying On The Inside."

"Out (Out)" is fun song with a groovy beat. The lyrics are about going out! Haha. But there is more than that, it's about isolation and wanting to be social, and you can tell by the lyrics that this was probably written during lockdown when the global pandemic was happening. Sadly, there is no official video, but there is an visualizer ....

"Out (Out)" was written and produced by Victoria Hesketh (aka Little Boots). It is available on digital outlets everywhere. Buy your copy today. We've added it to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify, which also features these songs by Little Boots: "Landline""Crying On The Inside", "I Specialize In Love" and "Burn This House."

Please remember to use Spotify as a way to hear new music. The best way to support the artists are to buy their music. Please do so!

Free Yourself by Jessie Ware

 Dear Poptastic Readers,

English singer/songwriter Jessie Ware released a new song a couple of weeks ago called "Free Yourself" and we finally heard and love it. Perhaps you will, too. You might remember that Jessie was featured on Kylie Minogue's song "Kiss Of Life", which landed at #16 in our Top 100 Songs of 2021.

"Free Yourself" is a glorious piano-led stomper of a track. It's the kind of song you want to imagine you walking down a runway. The lyrics are uplifting and this song just makes you feel so happy and confident. Jessie sounds amazing here. Check out the glorious music video ...

Something About Your Love and Missing You by SG Lewis

Dear Poptastic Readers,

New artist alert! Last year, English singer-songwriter, musician, and producer SG Lewis (née Samuel George Lewis) released his debut album Times, which included some great singles including “One More” that featured the legendary Nile Rodgers as well as the super-catchy “Chemicals from 2020. Now Sam is back with a pair of new tracks amounting to the digital equivalent of a double A-side: “Something About Your Love” and “Missing You.”

Save for a single verse and a sweetly starry-eyed refrain that gives the song it’s title, “Something About Your Love” is a largely instrumental jam that reverently references Daft Punk in its execution. It’s an uplifting track that captures the feeling of infatuation that comes at the beginning of a relationship. The song samples "Tender Love" by Force MDs.

Conversely, “Missing You” seems to be about that moment of realization that a relationship has run its course and a yearning for someone new. From the bouncy Bronski Beat synths that kick things off to the manic cowbells in the song’s final 30 seconds that recall Stock Aitken Waterman’s production on Dead Or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round” or Bananarama’s “Venus”, the song is steeped in neon 80s Hi-NRG.

"Something About Your Love" was written by James Harris, SG Lewis, Sophie Frances Cook, and Terry Lewis. It was produced by SG Lewis. "Missing You" was written by Ed Drewett, Jay Mooncie, Reuben James Butler, and SG Lewis, who also produced the track. Both songs are available on digital outlets everywhere. Buy your copies today. We've added both to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify. Please remember to use Spotify as a way to hear new music. Buying the music will really help the artist. Please do so!

Only Your Love,

—Jason F

Forever Young by Bananarama

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Bananarama have released a new single from their latest album Masquerade and the song is called "Forever Young." No, it is not a remake of songs with the same name by Alphaville or Rod Stewart. Now that we looked it up, there are a lot of songs called "Forever Young." This one is an original. And a glorious one at that! The band name breaking in the corner of the sleeve is a nod to the 1984 single release of "Robert De Niro's Waiting" as well as their second album, simply titled Bananarama.

The opening sounds of "Forever Young" start off sounding like a nod to the 80s, but the song sounds modern, and not stuck in the past. The verses reminisce about times gone by. The lyrics were written about Sara and Keren's relationship over their lifetime. The music at times sounds synthpop, but then also a bit rock pop. The overall feeling of this song is sentimental, as well as being a celebration of what has been accomplished so far. Be warned: The big sing-a-long chorus may have you smiling from ear to ear, and you just might have a slight tear in corner of your eye. Take notice of the extra chorus (we aren't exactly sure what to call it) at the very end. The official lyric video is perfection! It seamlessly captures Sara and Keren's friendship over the years while not relying heavily on the early years. We love it! Have a look here ...

"Forever Young" was written by Sara Dallin, Alice Dallin-Walker, and Ian Masterson, who also produced the track. It is available on digital outlets everywhere. Buy your copy today. We've added it to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify. You'll also hear their previous tracks "Favourite""Masquerade", and "Velvet Lies" there.

Nervous by Alice D

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Sorry we've been silent lately. We were on vacation last week. While we were away, Alice D released a fresh new song called "Nervous." Funnily enough, we saw Alice D twice last week — more on that below. The new song "Nervous" follows Alice's previous single "Passion", which was released at the end of June.

"Nervous" starts off with Afro-latin beats and a deep bass guitar. The guitar teases the listener. Alice comes out as confident as ever. "If I am comfortable being myself, does that make you nervous?" WOW! We think a lot people can relate for a variety of reasons, but we do take notice that this is Alice's story and she is telling it well. We are here for it. The music video features Alice in a field in amazing red outfit. We love it! Have a look ...

"Nervous" was written by Alice D, Melomé Clement, and Tim Blok, who also produced the track. It is available on digital outlets everywhere. Buy your copy today. We've added it to our 2022 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify. You'll also hear her previous single "Passion" there. As well as a version of her song "Favourite" that was covered by Bananarama. Please remember to use Spotify as a way to hear new music. The best way to support the artists are to buy their music. Please do so!

We've even added the music video to the top of our 2022 Poptastic Confessions YouTube playlist. Check it out ...

Last week, we saw Alice twice! Yes, we were in London for the Bananarama Masquerade album launch shows. Now, as you know from our review of Masquerade, Bananarama covered 2 of Alice's songs: "Favourite" and "Brand New." Alice also co-wrote 3 other songs on the album: "Velvet Lies", "Bad Love", and "Forever Young." A highlight of the show was seeing Alice perform both "Favourite" and "Brand New" with Bananarama. Check it out here ...
