The Return of Betty Boo

Dear Poptastic Readers,

English pop--dance-rap artist Betty Boo is back with a brand new single called "Get Me To The Weekend" and we are thrilled beyond belief! It is released this Sunday of all days. If you don't know who Betty Boo is, or if you need a refresh, here is your Betty Boo history lesson ...

Betty Boo is the artist name of Alison Clark, who is from London, England. She was originally part of a hip-hop trio called She Rockers in 1988. Even though Betty left the group in 1989, they released a single in 1990 after Betty Boo had success. The single was called "Give It A Rest (1990)" and credited to She Rockers featuring Betty Boo.

In August of 1989, Betty's debut single "Hey DJ/I Can't Dance (To That Music You're Playing)" by the Beatmasters featuring Betty Boo went to #7 in the UK, and #8 in the US Dance charts. It was also a Top 10 hit in New Zealand. Check out the retro-futuristic space age video ...

Her first solo single came in May of 1990 with the amazing track called "Doin' The Do." It was a Top 10 hit in the UK, Australia, Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, and it went to #1 on the US Dance chart.

The follow-up single "Where Are You Baby?" would be her biggest UK hit peaking at #3 in August of 1990. Another music video that was space age camp ...

Her debut album Boomania followed and it was an amazing album. So much fun. The album went to #4 in the UK. Boomania had indeed hit.

Another single "24 Hours" only went to #25 in the UK, but it was a Top 10 hit in Switzerland. It's a good bop. Check out the music video here ...

Two years would go by before Betty would release the first single from her sophomore album GRRR! It's Betty Boo. The single "Let Me Take You There" was released in July of 1992 and it went to #12 in the UK. This was a laid back summer chill vibe song, check out the Barbie-esque music video ...

Another single "I'm On My Way" was released in September of 1992, but it stalled in the UK charts at #44. This was more in line with Betty's first album, while still being a bit mature. Check out the lovely music video ...

The album was released in October of 1992 and it only went to #62 in the UK. It is a great album and it deserved better. If you haven't heard it, definitely have a listen!

The US would get a new single from the album in 1992 called "Thing Goin' On" and it went to #5 in the US Dance chart. Unsure why this didn't get a UK release. Sadly, there was no music video. You can listen to it here ...

In March of 1993, the UK got the single "Hangover" and it didn't do well only getting to #50. It did have a nice music video though ...

The US got another release in 1993 with "Catch Me" and it went to #14 in the US Dance Chart. There was no music video, but you can hear it here ...

Betty took a long break from the limelight. She turned her focus on to writing songs for other artists like Girls Aloud, Dannii Minogue, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and several others. She also co-wrote "Pure And Simple" ... a song the group Hear'Say took to #1 in the UK in 2001. Here is their music video ...

In 2006, Betty released a song called "WigWam" under the name Wigwam, which was a duo with her and the bassist of Blur Alex James. Their only single went to #60 in the UK. The music video takes place a roof with furries! Have a look ...

In 2007, Betty collaborated with Jack Rokka with the amazing song "Take Off." It didn't set the charts on fire, but it should have! This was just fabulous. The music video was super cute. Check it out ...

So here we are in 2022 ... and a brand new single! Yipee! Her new song is called "Get Me To The Weekend" and it will debut on the radio on Saturday, January 22 on BBC Radio 2 at 3pm on the Rylan Show. We'll be back on Monday with a feature of the new song. Apparently, it samples "Love Action (I Believe In Love)" by The Human League. WOO!

Listen to Betty Boo here ...

Cheers then,
