For the past 9 years, Parralox has released an album or EP in December mostly made up of cover versions. These albums have the name of Holiday with the last 2 numbers of the year afterwards. At the end of 2022, Parralox released Holiday '22.
Holiday '22 is an EP made up mostly of rock covers turned into synthpop delights. Intrigued? We were too. Before listening, we only knew 2 songs: the ons by Journey and ELO. Well, we knew the the bonus track, too. Let's review ..
1. "Malibu" was originally recorded by Hole. We never paid much attention to Hole's music. We could only remember one song, and this wasn't it. We quite like the Parralox version. John does a great job with the vocals. This is enjoyable.
2. "I Wanna Be Adored" was originally recorded by The Stone Roses. Another song that was new to us. It is a bit downtempo, but it has a good melody.
3. "Any Way You Want It" was originally recorded by Journey. Of course we knew this one. It's a big challenge to take on such a classic song. Parralox just transforms it into a synth pop jam.
4. "All Over The World" was originally recorded by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). This is the standout song of the EP! Of course, we love the ELO original as it was from the super campy movie Xanadu in 1980. Parralox gives a faithful update and we love it. Check out the music video on YouTube ...
5. "Old L.A. Tonight" was originally recorded by Ozzy Osbourne. This is a bit of a slower song and a nice way to end the EP. It also has a music video. Watch it here ...
There is a bonus track on Parralox's Bandcamp page. It is "Running Up That Hill", originally recorded by Kate Bush, and most recently made popular again thanks to the Stranger Things series on Netlflix. The music of Parralox's version is mashup between "Running Up That Hill" and "True Faith" by New Order. Check it out on the Bandcamp link above.
