Dear Poptastic Readers,
Last Friday, we featured the latest singles “Alarms” and “BB” by Daphne & Celeste. Turns out that our contributor Nick really loves the
album and wanted to do an album review! Yay!
Enjoy!~

Daphne
and Celeste Save The World... a grand statement but
to fully get on board with this you must first understand how Daphne and
Celeste nearly destroyed the world.
In 2000 they hit the UK charts with throwaway bubblegum pop tunes “U.G.L.Y”, “School's Out” and “Ooh Stick You.” People thought it was funny, annoying or insulting to music. Daphne & Celeste appeared at a music festival and were ‘asked to leave’ by the audience throwing bottles at them and even reportedly a wheelchair. They disappeared soon after.... nearly taking the world with them.

Fast forward to 2015(ish) and an electronic
musician with a penchant for 8bit sounds called Max Tundra got in touch with
them asking to collaborate. The result was the one off single “You & I Alone”,
an ice cool electro pop song delivered with post punk playful nonchalance. Check out the video ...
They then collaborated on a whole album.... Save The World. What we have is a very geeky album with lots of glitchy electro video game sounds poured into Daphne and Celeste’s ‘we just wanna have fun’ mould.
The result is joyous! “Alarms” could be the greatest pop song of the year with it’s epic electro chords and stomping beat.... then you see the video where Daphne and Celeste befriend an alien.... geek overload.

It’s almost like an exercise in how it
should’ve been done first time around for them. Listen to the rest of the album
and you have many an intelligent, witty and addictive pop ditty.
“BB” (Or Basic
Busker, a sideswipe at ‘grown up’ radio music a la Ed Sheeran), “Song To A Succulent” (in which the under-appreciated suddenly draws adoration... loving
this metaphor!), on “Whatever Happened To Yazz?” the girls consider where she
went (did she find a brighter day?).... “Taking Notes” could be any number of cool ‘we
don’t give a fuck’ female acts other the years as the verses are deadpanned
over squelches and buzzes.
As we all know, great pop music lifts the spirits, it makes us
sing and dance... when pop music is witty it brings a smile and a laugh, when
it’s intelligent it makes you think too and keeps the mind active.... imagine
if we were a world of a happy, joyous and mentally engaged people.... no war,
just dancing and practical solutions to complex problems. I put it to you that Daphne and Celeste Save The World isn’t
just a tongue in cheek album title, it’s a new world order!
Listen. Get happy. (For the record the Mint Royale remix of
their much maligned debut single “Ooh Stick You” is a CHOOOOOON).
