Do They Know It's Christmas? by Band Aid 40

Dear Poptastic Readers,

It is the 40th anniversary of the legendary charity pop song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid. This year there is new mix of the song under the name Band Aid 40.

Before we get to that, let's have a look back at the versions that have happened along the way. There was Band Aid II, Band Aid 20, and Band Aid 30.

In 1984, there was a drought in Ethiopia, which caused a famine. People there were dying of hunger. Bob Geldof of the Boomtown Rats and Midge Ure of Ultravox got together and wrote the song to raise money for the country. They asked many of their pop star friends to be a part of the record. Artists included Duran Duran, U2, Bananarama, Culture Club, George Michael, Jody Watley, Spandau Ballet, Kool and The Gang, Phil Collins, Paul Young, and many more.

In 1989, a new group of artists got together under the name Band Aid II and recorded a more upbeat version with producers Stock Aitken Waterman. The only returning artists from the original version were Bananarama, although with a new lineup. The other artists were Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Cathy Dennis, Bros, Jimmy Sommerville, Big Fun, Lisa Stansfield, Cliff Richard, and many more.

On the 20th anniversary, another new group of artists recorded a new version under the name Band Aid 20. Despite having the Sugababes, this is largely considered to be the worst version as it includes a jarring guitar solo, an awkward rap, and chorus doesn't blend all that well. The artists were Bono from U2, Chris Martin of Cold Play, Sugababes, Daniel and Natasha Bedingfield, Dido, Robbie Williams, and many others.

Before Band Aid 20 came out, there was a campaign to get Bananarama involved as they had been on the previous 2 records. We think it worked out that they weren't there, because we find this version hard to listen to.

On the 30th anniversary, Band Aid 30 was created and this time to sing about the Ebola crisis in Africa, which felt a little disjointed as the chorus "Feed The World" remains. Bono returned again for this one, too. They finally changed the cringeworthy lyrics "Tonight, thank God it's them instead of you." The other artists were One Direction, Ellie Goudling, Rita Ora, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Jessie Ware, Seal, Sinéad O'Connor, and many others.

And now we have Band Aid 40 ... kind of. There isn't a new super group. It is just new mix of the song features vocals from the original, Band Aid 20, and Band Aid 30. It does seem like Band Aid II was left out, but sadly, the master recordings could not be found in a timely manner, which really is too bad because it would have been nice to include them.

The new mix is a bit strange, and we aren't quite sure we like it very much. Instead of blending the singers together, there is a lot of repeating the lines. Sadly, Bono's cringeworthy line is back and repeated a couple of times. The good news is the video is better than the song.

We think that none of the remakes have been better than the original. So that is our go-to version. We do have a soft spot for Band Aid II, as it is the best of the cover versions.

Because we love the first 2 versions of the song, both Band Aid I and Band Aid II have been added to our Spotify playlist called A Very Poptastic Christmas playlist on Spotify.

Midnight Train by Kim Wilde

Dear Poptastic Readers,

English pop rocker Kim Wilde is back with a new single called "Midnight Train." It is her second single this year after "Trail Of Destruction" was released in August. Both songs are from her forthcoming album Closer.

The colouring on the single looks very similar to Kylie Minogue's Tension album, doesn't it? "Midnight Train" is a very retro sounding as we are getting early 80s vibes. However, you can tell by the production that it is a modern song. The music video features Kim on a train (surprise!) with some bizarre things happening. You can check it out on our 2024 Poptastic Confessions YouTube Playlist.

"Midnight Train" was written by Ricky Wilson. It is available on digital outlets. Buy your copy today! Listen to it on our 2024 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify ...

Look At You Now by OMD

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark (OMD) have a new song called "Look At You Now." You might remember that we featured their single "Kleptocracy" earlier this year in February.

"Look At You Now" starts off a bit slow, but then the strings come in and it turns into a mid-tempo pop song with a nice melody and big sing-along chorus. It has an amazing space-age video that we have added to our 2024 Poptastic Confessions YouTube Playlist.

"Look At You Now" was written by Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys. It was produced by OMD.  It is available on digital outlets everywhere. Buy your copy today! Listen to it on our 2024 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify ...

Bending The Rules by Infernal

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Danish duo Infernal have released their 5th single this year and it is called "Bending The Rules." We have featured their previous singles "Saw It All Coming""Touch Heaven", and "Loving What I Got" and "Deserve It All."

"Bending The Rules" is more in line with their first 2 singles of the year as they are all proper pop songs. Of course, with a dance beat, which we would expect from Infernal. This song has a lovely melody and Lina sound great. The music has an edge with soaring keys, and we quite like it. We've added the official audio to our 2024 Poptastic Confessions YouTube Playlist ...

Trigger and You Can by Francine Belle

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Over the weekend, we saw that Francine Belle released a video visualizer for her song "You Can." Then we discovered that she released a video visualizer for her song "Trigger" 3 weeks ago and we missed it. D'oh! Better late than never! Both songs are from her Melody EP. We have already featured the songs "Melody" and "Storm."

We'll start with "Trigger" since we missed it. When we first heard "Trigger", we didn't have a western feel in mind. However, after seeing the western-themed video visualizer, we feel it. It is mellow pop song and Francine gives a commanding vocal performance. We've added the video visualizer to our 2024 Poptastic Confessions YouTube Playlist ...

And now for the latest ...

"You Can" is a bit more upbeat and filled with attitude. It is about self-empowerment, and we love it. The music video features a hip cartoon. We also added this to our 2024 Poptastic Confessions YouTube Playlist ...

Both songs were written by Francine Belle. The Melody EP

An Interview with Annikafiore about the Alcazar reunion

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Over the weekend, Swedish TV show called SÃ¥ Myckret Bättre, which translate to "So Much Better", reunited the original lineup of Alcazar! They performed a cover the Dregen song "Just Like That (I Like It)." We featured the single release on FridayIf you aren't familiar with the group, check out our history of Annikafiore and Alcazar. We asked Annikafiore about the experience.

We made this cover

Hello, Annikafiore! How did it feel to reunite with Andreas and Tess again?

It felt like the time was right. Being on stage together with a new song felt like coming home. The way it felt was like when "Crying At The Discoteque" became a hit. We were really best friends then.

Will there be any future reunions for you and Alcazar?

For me, the saga ends here. But Alcazar music is forever.

If you were on Så Mycket Bättre, which artists and songs would you want to cover?

Oh, I think the artists this year were very interesting. So add ABBA and Roxette to the mix and I'm in! I love "If It Wasn't For The Nights" and "It Must Have Been Love."

The World misses Annikafiore. Do you have any plans to release more solo music in the future?

Thank you. Well, I have so many unreleased songs and I would love to do something. But most of all, I miss singing live. I've honestly felt it's been too hard and that I'm too sensitive for show business, but it would be nice to find a way. Maybe I will release a new version of "I've Still Got The Highest Heels In The Room", from Avatar versus Eve, because that's how I feel today.

Anything else you want to let the fans know?

I want to add that I love Tess and Andreas very much, and I'm proud of our song "Just Like That."

Thank you, Annikafiore! Hopefully 2025 sees more new music from you!

When Annika hit the high note during the performance, we burst out crying. We literally had tears running down our faces as we watched the crowd get to their feet. As soon as it was over, we watched it again and cried a second time, too. This is the power of music. Thank you, Andreas, Annikafiore, and Tess for creating Alcazar magic.

"Just Like That (I Like It)" was written by Dregen and Pär Wiksten. It was produced by Dino Medanhodzic. It is available on digital outlets. Buy your copy today. Listen to it on our 2024 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify ...

Just Like That (I Like It) by Andreas Lundstedt featuring Annikafiore, Lina Hedlund & Tess Merkel

Dear Poptastic Readers,

The original lineup of Alcazar (Andreas, Annikafiore, and Tess) have reunited for a Swedish TV show called "SÃ¥ Myckret Bättre", which translates to "So Much Better." Woooo! It aires in Sweden on Sunday night, and we can't wait. However, the new single was released today. HOORAY! It is cover of a rock song called "Just Like That (I Like It)" by Dregen. Don't worry, Alcazar have made it into a glimmering disco ditty. If you aren't familiar with Alcazar, check out our history of Alcazar and Annikafiore

Too bad the cover doesn't feature Annikafiore and Tess.

Alcazar's version of "Just Like That (I Like It)" is so much fun. The music is reminiscent of their megahit "This Is The World We Live In." One of the best parts is when Annikafiore hits a high note near the end, and that reminds us of when she did it in "Alcastar." While the TV show features the original lineup of Alcazar, the studio version also includes vocals from Lina, who replaced Annikafiore. We aren't really sure why as it seems to be a celebration of the original lineup. (We have nothing against Lina as we loved the performance of all 5 members at Europride 2019.We can't wait for the TV show performance to be on YouTube, but until then, we've added the official audio to our 2024 Poptastic Confessions YouTube Playlist.

Högt Över Havet and Gråter Tillsammans Över Varandra by Andreas Lundstedt

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Alcazar singer Andreas Lundstedt is taking part of the Swedish TV show called "SÃ¥ Myckret Bättre", which translates to "So Much Better." Artists on the show take turns covering the other artists' songs. So far, Andreas has released two new singles: "Högt Över Havet" and "GrÃ¥ter Tillsammans Över Varandra." The news has already leaked that the single tomorrow (Friday) is sung with the original lineup of Alcazar! Woooooo! Mi amore, Annikafiore!

Let's discuss the first of the new songs: "Högt Över Havet." It translates to "High Above The Sea." This song was originally performed by Arja Saijonmaa at the Swedish Melodifestivalen in 1987. Melodifestavalen is Sweden's selection process of the song that will represent the country in the Eurovision Song Contest. Andreas does an amazing job on this cover. We weren't familiar with the song (nor do we speak Swedish), but we love. it. We've added the official music video to our 2024 Poptastic Confessions YouTube Playlist ...

And now for the next song ...

The next single is "GrÃ¥ter Tillsammans Över Varandra." This translates to "Crying Together Over Each Other." This song was originally performed by Estraden (Louise Lennartsson). This is more of an emotional song and Andreas does a great job with the vocals. We've also added the official music video to our 2024 Poptastic Confessions YouTube Playlist ...

Needless to say, we will feature the song tomorrow with Alcazar with Annikafiore!

"Högt Över Havet" was written by Lasse Holm and produced by Jimmy Janson. "GrÃ¥ter Tillsammans Över Varandra" was written by Fanny Hultman, Johan Lindbrandt, Louise Lennartson, and Robin Stjernberg. It was produced by Kristofer Strandberg. Both songs are available on digital outlets everywhere. We've added them to our 2024 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify ...

Shine on,
