I'm Here Bitch, No One Above, Unification Vibration, Earth Walkers, The Get Down, and Givin It To You by Glass Slipper

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Our favorite deep house duo Glass Slipper have been very busy this year! We featured 3 of their songs in June, and since then they've had 6 more releases and they have more on the way. So let's catch up!

The one we are most excited about is called "I'm Here Bitch." It has lots of remixes, but our favorite is the Dutchman Soul Mogue Radio Mix. That is also the mix featured in the music video, which features a brief cameo from our very own Sausi O'Sullivan. See if you can spot her! Woo!

Next up is "No One Above" ... And it comes in a radio edit! This dance pop song has a big vocal from Lisa, like most of their songs. This also has a club mix, and an instrumental club mix. Have a listen ...

"Unification Vibration" is a fun song, too. The music is dark with glorious uplifting vocals. It comes in a dub and instrumental mix. Hear it here ...

"Earth Walkers" doesn't have a radio edit, but it does have a fun bass groove. There is also a b-side/double a-side called "Passing Through." The release of this has a remix for both songs. Hear them on Spotify.

"The Get Down" is a house number with some funk thrown in for good fun. There is a vocal mix and a dub mix. Hear them on Spotify.

"Given It To You" is a bit more downtempo and very lounge house. This also comes with a dub mix. Hear them on Spotify.

All of these songs were written and produced by Glass Slipper. We've added all of them to our 2020 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify. Enjoy!~

Cheers then,

Húsavík (My Hometown) by My Marianne & Will Ferrell

Dear Poptastic Readers,

We weren't sure about the new Will Ferrell movie about the Eurovision Song Contest, but we watched and loved it! Sure, there were some really silly parts, but the movie really had some nice moments. Also, the
music was awesome! That brings us to the song "Húsavík (My Hometown)" by My Marianne & Will Ferrell. The movie is called Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.

Who is My Marianne? It is Swedish singer Molly Sandén using an alias. She sings all of Rachel McAdams songs in the movie.

Molly Sandén is My Marianne

"Húsavík (My Hometown)" is mostly sung in English, but there is some Icelandic, too. Thus, the name. The song is the big moment of the movie. It is the power ballad of all power ballads and it has the goosebump factor. Especially the BIG note at the end. If you haven't seen the movie yet, be warned, this music video will give parts of the movie away.

Wasn't that fab? My Marianne/Molly Sandén also recorded an acoustic version and made a music video for it. See that here ...

"Húsavík (My Hometown)" was written and produced by Savan Kotecha, Fat Max Gsus, and Rickard Göransson. We've added it to our 2020 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on SpotifyEnjoy!~

Ultra Violet (Re-issue) by Bananarama

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Bananarama have re-issued their 1995 album Ultra Violet and it is on vinyl for the first time ever. It is also available in the UK on streaming services for the first time. The only thing missing is the re-issue on CD. We'll get to that a bit later.

To truly understand Ultra Violet, you have to know some of the history about what was going on with Bananarama at the time. In 1993, Bananarama parted ways with their record company London Records. Sara and Keren took some time off and headed back to the studio in 1994 to record an album on their own dime—it was self-funded with producer Gary Miller at the helm. It was Bananarama's first indie album. They would then shop the album around to different labels in various territories. Sadly, it was never released in the UK, until now that is.

The cover in Canada

Ultra Violet mostly has the eurodance pop sound, which was popular during the 90s. However, there are some mid-tempo ballads here, too.

The album in Japan

It was first released in Asia under the name I Found Love, which was also the first single in Japan. Bananarama recorded the original version with producer Tetsuya Komuro, and the ROZi Mix was mixed by Maximizor. The music video has the remix. Watch it here ...

The next single released was "Every Shade Of Blue", which is also the lead track of the album. It was a rather moody dance pop song with with a wonderful melody. It had lots of remixes and it was popular in dance clubs around the world in 1995 and 1996. Check out the music video here ...

"Rhythm Of Life" is a fun song, and there were rumors back in the day that this would be a single. It wasn't, but there is a video of them in Canada performing the song. See it here ...

The album version of "Take Me To Your Heart" is a bit adult contemporary. However, the song was remixed for the single in 1996 and it is quite uplifting. Speaking of remixes, there were techno, disco, and reggae versions. Quite fun! Check out the charming video of Sara and Keren spending the day in a park ...

There were plans to release "Prove Your Love" as a single. Even remixes were commissioned by Curb Records in the USA. Those mixes done by Vinny Vero eventually were released on iTunes in America. Check out this performance in Japan ...

We've always had a soft spot for "Take Me Away." Especially the second verse: "How can I love you more? Heaven knows that you're the one I waited for" ... It's just a lovely song about being in love. Have a listen ...

"System" picks back up the Eurodance beat and it is rather electrifying. Just have a listen ...

The slowest song on the album is "Maybe The Next Time." This ballad has some R-n-B elements. It's very chill. Hear it here ...

The title alone of "You've Really Got Something" is a nod to Bananarama's past (Really Saying Something). It really is so much fun. Too bad it wasn't a single because it is ACE. Here's hoping they revisit this tune some day. Check it out ...

"Time Out" keeps up the momentum with another hi-nrg track with clever lyrics in the verses. Take some time out to listen to it ...

"Don't Stop Me Now" doesn't stop the beats on this stomper. The glorious chorus is testament that this should have been a single contender, too. Get your dancing shoes on with this one ...

A slight change of pace with "Give In To Me" ... no, it's not a ballad, but a dance track with a rather fast jungle beat with whispering vocals. The result was unlike anything we've heard from Bananarama before, or since. You can also hear some solo vocals happening ...

Now the US version of Ultra Violet included the original version "I Found Love" as the last track. It was left off the European releases. It is on the new vinyl version! Yay! We think the original version is best. It's just so slinky! Watch a live performance of it here ...

Ultra Violet may have lacked a big record label with a lot of money, but it did not lack on gorgeous melodies, fun lyrics, and a good time. That's really what we want from Bananarama, right? Ultra Violet is a great dance pop album, and if you haven't heard it, have a listen on Spotify, but to truly support the artist, pay for a download or buy the physical product.

Sadly, the latest reissue is not available on CD. We hope one day it is, because it would lovely to have all of the remixes on it. But for now, you can order the vinyl from Amazon.

Cheers then,
—Davearama

En Stilla Depression by Lena Philipsson

Dear Poptastic Readers,

Today we are featuring a song sung in Swedish by Lena Philipsson. The song is called “En Stilla Depression” (which translates to “A Silent Depression”).

Lena Philipsson has been one of Sweden’s most-loved singers since the 80s! Since she took part in Melodifestivalen, her country’s internal selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, for three years in a row, and by achieving a huge success with all her three entries.

Since then, she has had an amazing career in Sweden, scoring many hits and becoming one of their most acclaimed popstars (which, considering how many there are in Sweden, is quite a feat). There was a small period of time in the late 90s and early noughties in which she didn’t release many songs. But she had one of the most phenomenal comebacks in history in 2004 when she won Melodifestivalen and since then she’s Sweden’s reigning pop queen. She has just released her 14th album Maria Magdalena, and it’s one of the most poptastic releases of this year!

Her current single “En Stilla Depression” (A Silent Depression), despite the title, is a bright pop number, which reminds us of Ace of Base a lot! The music video was directed by Lena herself! It shows 4 sides of her, simultaneously! We love how she doesn’t take herself too seriously! Have a look …

There’s also a just-released remix pack for the song, featuring 3 reinterpretations with songwriter/producer Linda Sonnvik at the helm. Our favorite is the Sonnvik x partillemartin Remix! Have a listen ...

If you like listening to pop music on other languages than English, Lena Phillipson’s discography is a goldmine just waiting for you! Don’t miss it!

“En Stilla Depression” was written by Lena Philipsson. It was produced by Anders Hansson. The remixes were done by Linda Sonnvik with partillemartin, Kentomen, and Valence. We've add the original version and all 3 remixes to  our 2020 Poptastic Confessions Playlist on Spotify. Enjoy!~

Shine on,
—Raoni
